stock image policeTroopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed on I-40 early Wednesday morning.

Ann Elizabeth Gillum, 52, of Raleigh died in the wreck reported on I-40 near exit 416 in New Hanover County at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper K.B. Parker.

Gillum was reportedly in the middle of the right hand westbound lane of I-40 on foot, where she was struck by a black 2008 Mercedes, Parker said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the wreck, Parker said. Troopers were not able to confirm why Gillum was in the highway or what she was doing in the area. Her family has been notified of her death.

No charges have been filed in the wreck at this time, Parker said, and the investigation is ongoing.
