A Wilmington police seized nearly 800 bindles of heroin following the arrest of a gang member on drug trafficking charges Tuesday.
Damien Tatron McGill, 28, of Wilmington, was originally arrested on an outstanding warrant for driving while license revoked while in the 100 block of North Front Street early Tuesday afternoon, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.
Vice detectives and officers with the police department’s Mobile Field Force noticed McGill as they were walking in the area, Lindsay said. Detectives allegedly seized 90 bindles of heroin from his possession and several hundred dollars in cash, Lindsay said.
A subsequent search of McGill’s apartment in the 1400 block of Grace Street was conducted after his arrest. Drug agents seized more than 700 bindles of heroin, 8 grams of raw heroin, 11 grams of crack cocaine and more than $5,000 in cash from the home.
At the time of his arrest, McGill was on pre-trial release for felony charges and under electronic monitoring, Lindsay said. In November 2015, he was one of three people arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a barber shop in the 900 block of South Third Street in Wilmington.
McGill has been charged with two counts of trafficking in opium or heroin; two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver heroin; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver cocaine; possession of heroin; two counts of manufacturing, selling, delivering, or possessing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park; maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance; manufacturing a schedule I controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; and driving while license revoked.
He was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $10 million secured bond.
