Government offices closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Aquarium offers free admission

The following area agencies are closed Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

City of Wilmington

City offices will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Offices will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 19. Trash service will run on a regular schedule.

City customers who normally have their trash and yard waste picked up on Mondays are asked to have all items curbside by 7:30 a.m. Monday. City recycling customers who are on the BLUE schedule and normally have their recycling collected on Mondays should place their recycling containers curbside by 7:30 a.m. as well.

The Wilmington City Council meeting agenda briefing that would normally be held Monday morning will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall. The city council meeting will be held on its regular schedule that evening at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

New Hanover County

New Hanover County will close its administrative offices Monday, Jan. 18. County offices will reopen and resume normal hours of operation on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

All New Hanover County branch libraries will be closed Monday, Jan. 18. For more information about library locations and hours click here. The New Hanover County Landfill will be open Monday with regular hours of operation.

Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure beaches

The Town of Wrightsville Beach will close offices on Monday, Jan. 18. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The Town of Carolina Beach will close its offices, including Town Hall, on Monday. Town Hall will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The Town of Kure Beach will be closed on Monday. Kure Beach Town Council’s regular meeting is scheduled at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Town Hall.

Brunswick County

All Brunswick County government buildings and offices will be closed Monday. County commissioners’ regular meeting will be held from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The county’s solid waste office will be closed Monday, Jan. 18 and will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The county landfill, convenient centers, curbside garbage and recycling collection will run on a regular schedule.

Area attractions

The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher will be open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m, Monday, Jan. 18. The aquarium is offering free admission on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The U.S.S. North Carolina will be open Monday.
