An event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of V-J (Victory in Japan) Day will be held this weekend at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site.
The free program will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. Festivities will include historic weapons and military equipment demonstrations, discussions led by reenactors and hands-on activities for children. Discussion topics include the history of Camp Davis in Onslow County, the anti-aircraft artillery school, life on the home front, life as a soldier during World War II and different roles taken on by women during the war.
The United States Marine Corps Historical Company and the North Carolina Military Museum located at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Center will set up uniform, equipment and weaponry displays. Guest speakers will include Wilmington National Cemetery Superintendent Bill Jayne and historian David Stallman. Another scheduled guest speaker, Krystal Davenport, will be discussing the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASP, program at Camp Davis.
The weekend activities celebrate the official signing of a document to surrender by the Japanese on Sept. 2, 1945, which effectively ended World War II. All members of the public are invited to attend.
