Hundreds of people came out Saturday to learn about bike safety at an event that returned to Carolina Beach after a six-year hiatus.
Bike Rodeo drew about 500 participants, according to the Carolina Beach Police Department, which organized the event. Turnout was lighter than in the past, when attendance grew so large during an initial eight-year run that it strained police resources, partially leading to its cancellation following its last appearance in 2008.
One of the officers in charge of the reboot said he was proud to bring the rodeo back.
“Overall it was a successful event,” Detective Anthony Marcucilli said. “It has a positive impact on the community.”
There was a safety course, bounce house, carnival games and shows by the nationally recognized stunt group King BMX Stunt Show. Local donations provided free food and beverages.
Many of those who came left with a new helmet or a new bike. More than 200 helmets, donated by local businesses, were handed out, and 34 new bikes were raffled off. Five refurbished bikes were also given away.
