A music icon and a star on the rise are among the performers at this year’s Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues and Jazz Festival.
The legendary fusion band Dr. John and the Nite Trippers and soulful singer Shemekia Copeland have been picked as the double headliners for the 22nd annual event, set for Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area
Grammy Award-winning Dr. John and the Nite Trippers will bring their unique blend of New Orleans R&B and classic funk to the stage on Oct. 10.
Best known for his hit, “Right Place Wrong Time,” Dr. John has played with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, James Taylor, Neil Diamond and Derek Trucks, among others.
Opening up for Dr. John is Australian songstress and slide guitarist Kara Grainger, who has toured with big names, such Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal and Jonny Lang.
Copeland will close out the festival on Oct. 11. Dubbed “Queen of the Blues,” the two-time Grammy nominee–who’s played with the Stones, Buddy Guy, B.B. King and Eric Clapton–will be back by popular demand following her performance in Pleasure Island last year.
Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King will bring their Texas rocking blues to the stage ahead of Copeland.
In addition to the four main acts, this year’s festival will feature 10 blues and jazz groups on two stages.
As always, the event will include a wide selection of local fare and the free Kidzone, which features magicians, face painting, laser tag, educational exhibits and inflatables.
Area vendors will be on hand to sell their wares, and beer and wine will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $50 in advance for a two-day pass or can be purchased at the door for $60 on Saturday and $25 on Sunday. Admission is free for children 12 and under.
