Castle Hayne man indicted in 2014 fatal motorcycle wreck

A Brunswick County grand jury has indicted a Castle Hayne man in connection with a motorcycle wreck that killed a 43-year-old man in July 2014.

James Joseph Robertson, 58, was indicted March 23, charged with felony death by motor vehicle, no motorcycle endorsement and failure to maintain lane control in connection with the death of Robert George Gallagher, III. Gallagher died from injuries sustained in a wreck on U.S. 17 near Leland on July 27, 2014, according to court records.

Troopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the wreck on U.S. 17 just south of Leland near the I-140 overpass at 2:23 p.m., according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Ransom. Robertson and his passenger, Gallagher, were thrown from the motorcycle.

Robertson suffered significant brain injuries, which prevented highway patrol from charging him until Feb. 21, Ransom said. Troopers have charged also charged Robertson with driving while impaired, according to arrest warrants.

Robertson was booked at the Brunswick County jail under a $50,000 secured bond. His next court date was not available.
