A hit-and-run that led to a high-speed chase ended when a driver struck a utility pole, which delayed traffic for more than an hour at 17th and Wooster streets this morning.
Witnesses reported that a woman driving a gray Nissan Sentra hit a white Honda Accord in the parking lot of the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Oleander Drive at about 6:45 a.m., according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley.
The man whose car was hit pursued the woman down Oleander Drive at more than 75 mph. The woman driving the Nissan lost control of the car at the intersection of 17th and Wooster streets, striking a utility pole and the side of a building at 730 S. 18th St.
The wreck delayed traffic in the area for more than a hour, Rawley said.
The driver of the Accord–65-year-old Stuart Michael Lopes–was charged with careless and reckless driving.
Rachel Lea Harvell, 21, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries. Additional charges are pending, Rawley said.
