Power has been restored to most of the 34,000 customers in New Hanover County who were without power around 11 a.m. today.

Duke Energy Progress reported massive power outages in eastern Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said. A problem with equipment on a transmission line knocked out power to 11,673 customers in Ogden, 12,262 customers near Wrightsville Beach and 9,908 customers in the Masonboro area.

By 11:30 a.m., crews were able to restore power to most of the area, but brief outages can be expected for the next few hours as crews continue to fix the problem with the equipment, Sheehan said.

A power surge created traffic light outages in the area as well, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Sgt. J.J. Brewer.
