Work to preserve the bridge that carries N.C. 211/North Howe Street across the Duke Energy discharge canal in Southport will require nightly road closures beginning tonight, July 8, and continuing through next Monday, July 15.
Not to be confused with the N.C. 87/River Road bridge that also crosses the discharge canal, the N.C. 211 bridge is just north of the Southport Walmart and just south of its intersection with N.C. 133/Dosher Cutoff.
The project will close that portion of 211 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night through Sunday, July 14. With favorable weather, the work is expected to be completed by the following Monday morning.
Motorists are advised to use signed detour routes along 87/River Road and 133/Dosher Cutoff.
Previously scheduled for late June, the bridgework was postponed to this week so as not to conflict with the Southport-hosted N.C. Fourth of July Festival.
The project involves application of a sealant, called an epoxy overlay, to the bridge deck. The process involves a thorough cleaning of the bridge deck, according to a notice from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
“A liquid epoxy is then applied to the bridge deck to seal any cracks. Finally, stone is placed across the bridge deck to ensure excellent traction for vehicles,” the notice states. “These enhancements will improve the ride quality for motorists, as well as help the 41-year-old bridge last longer by sealing and protecting the pavement from water damage.”
Motorists are reminded to use caution in the area, watch signs for construction information and allow plenty of time to reach their destinations.
