A juvenile suspect is in custody following a shooting Sunday in Leland.
According to Leland Police Department Lt. Joseph R. Pierce, at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to 113 Old Fayetteville Road, where they found a 16-year-old female victim who had been shot in the leg. Pierce said the victim was shot with a handgun.
The suspect fled the crime scene and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit assisted in the suspect search, Pierce said.
“Thanks to them, we were able to get a track on the suspect and find his location,” Pierce said.
Pierce said officers found the juvenile close to the scene of the crime–at a car wash on Village Road.
The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit to be treated for her injuries. No additional information about her injuries or condition was immediately available.
Pierce said the suspect’s charges are pending.
