Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatality reported Monday night on U.S. 74-76 in Leland.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. C.K. Parks, Mark Mooring, 38, of Wilmington was killed while driving his moped west on U.S. 74-76 about a mile from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge at about 10 p.m. Monday.
When the moped driver tried to change lanes, he struck the backside of an 18-wheeler, Parks said.
“We have no reason to believe the driver would even know he hit anything,” Parks said.
Parks said investigators would like to get a statement from the truck driver and look at his vehicle, strictly for investigative purposes. Troopers don’t suspect any wrongdoing by the truck driver, Parks said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call N.C. Highway Patrol at (910) 395-3917.
