Local police and officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close the eastbound lane of the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge to allow two lanes of traffic to flow in each direction in 15-minute increments following Saturday night’s annual flotilla.
The four-lane bridge was reduced to two lanes of travel for a long-term bridge rehabilitation project in October.
Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Lucy Crockett said DOT planned to close the eastbound lane around 7:30 p.m. Saturday
“The current plan is to allow traffic to flow off the beach for 15 minutes and then allow traffic to flow onto the beach for 15 minutes,” Crockett said.
Crockett said drivers heading to and from Wrightsville Beach during the peak period Saturday night will likely encounter heavy traffic on Eastwood Road and Wrightsville Avenue.
Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington Police departments will monitor the flow of traffic and modify the plan as needed, Crockett said.
