New Hanover County to seek public opinion in random-sample survey

For the first time in over a decade, New Hanover County is seeking the public’s opinion via a community survey.

Commissioners recently approved funding for a random-sampling survey to be mailed to 4,000 households in late November. The surveys, which cost just under $15,000, ask residents’ opinion on various county services, from general fiscal management, quality-of-life concerns and individual department performance.

County Manager Chris Coudriet recommended the surveys as a means for learning what the public expects. At a meeting this month, Coudriet told the board that a goal would be to conduct another survey every two to three years. Funds for this survey were included in the current fiscal-year budget, Coudriet also noted.

“Delivering true value for taxpayer dollars begins first by engaging in a dialogue with our community about its perceptions and satisfaction with county services,” Coudriet said in a recent press release.

“This survey is an opportunity to hear what our citizens have to say about what we do well and what needs improvement. Using these results, we can deliver more effective, efficient and responsive outcomes,” he said.

Coudriet told the board results from the survey could be shared as early as January. Feedback could very well shape the board’s discussions during budget preparations and goal-setting sessions in the months that will follow. Residents receiving the surveys are encouraged to participate.
