WILMINGTON — The New Hanover County Schools district announced Hoggard High students will continue remote learning on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The high school was also shuttered Monday due to mold remediation, as students logged in for virtual classroom assignments.
“We know another remote learning day may create challenges for families, and we appreciate your understanding as we take the time needed to complete this work,” the district noted in a release. “We will continue to provide updates as testing and remediation are completed.”
Students will receive assignments and instructions from teachers, according to the district. All extracurricular activities can proceed as planned, including athletic events.
John T. Hoggard students have been engaged in remote learning as heavy cleanup efforts and testing were underway due to mold growth in the school. The infestation grew over the summer, due to hotter-than-normal temperatures paired with humidity and the district’s energy- and cost-savings measures that included lowering the use of its HVAC systems, as first reported by WHQR.
Students are expected to return to classrooms mid-week, on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Post-remediation testing has been completed in the cafeteria, to reopen Wednesday. The district also anticipates the ROTC building to open, though it will be determined after final testing results arrive.
Cleanup efforts also continue in Hoggard’s science building and two classrooms in the main building, to be tested once complete. The district expects these areas to reopen in two weeks.
