WILMINGTON — The Wilmington City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on a proposal to rename the Greenfield Grind Skate Park in honor of Alec Chambers, a professional skateboarder referred to as the “de facto mayor” of the park.
Chambers died at age 32 on Dec. 30, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle near Satellite Bar & Lounge in the South Front neighborhood. The driver, Michelle Masiello, has been charged with second-degree murder and driving while impaired.
The push to rename the park at 368 Park St. began almost immediately following his death. A community-led petition garnered more than 6,800 signatures, and local skaters and businesses — including Leaf and Barrel and Family First Turf Care — raised funds to cover the city’s $200 filing and $500 public outreach fees. A donation jar was also kept at Satellite Bar, where Chambers worked as a bartender, to support the application.
The proposal received formal backing from the International Association of Wilmington Firefighters Local 129, as Chambers’ brother, Chandler, is a member of the department. The association noted the renaming would stand as a “visible reminder” to the human cost of impaired driving.
“Renaming the facility… is the right choice,” Councilmember David Joyner said in a release. “I hope that the name change can serve as a memorial to Alec’s life, his skateboarding talents and career, and be a comfort to his family and friends.”
The proposal moves to the full council with a unanimous recommendation from the city’s Naming Facilities Committee. Beyond the moniker change to “The Alec Chambers Skate Park of Wilmington,” supporters hope the move sparks a broader revitalization of the park’s aging skating surfaces.
City Council will meet to consider the name change on Tuesday, April 7.
