Emily Sawaked joins Port City Daily team

Emily Sawaked joins the PCD team: “I have long been a supporter of local, hyper-niche coverage and want to be a touchstone for my community. More so, I want to be a trustworthy source of information on topics that matter most.” (Port City Daily/Brenna Flanagan)

WILMINGTON — A Wilmingtonian for only a few weeks, Emily hails from Bloomfield, New Jersey. She graduated from Columbia University with a Masters of Science in investigative journalism.

Below she talks about why she chose to work for a local newsroom in North Carolina and why journalism matters.

“At Columbia University, we often discussed the decline of trust in news nowadays, but we also learned, over everything else, consumers had faith in their local outlets,” Emily said. “I have long been a supporter of local, hyper-niche coverage and want to be a touchstone for my community. More so, I want to be a trustworthy source of information on topics that matter most.

The role I’ve seen journalism play has centered around accountability, accessibility, and transparency. Where I come from, there’s an oversaturation of news, but often there is always something missing to the story. I believe readers should never have to struggle to understand the whole truth, and elected officials and others in charge should be held accountable for the whole story coming to light. That is what I want to bring more of to Port City Daily.

While I am new to the area, so far I’ve covered politics and its impact on the local community, specifically low-income seniors in the Cape Fear. I’ve also reached into the nonprofit sector and covered the local domestic violence shelter receiving a $1.4-million grant from The Endowment — a lifeline in light of increased federal and state funding cuts.

As I continue to live here and get to know the community more, I’m eager to dive into the local political and justice spheres, as well as business and development. My primary beats will center on beach towns, such as Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure beaches, Southport and Oak Island. But it won’t be limited there — so reach out with tips.

I promise to be your trusted source of information and a listening ear.

A few of Emily’s favorites

Local spot: K-Town so far — but send recommendations my way!

Halloween candy and costume: Heath bars and sour candy. My favorite costume is a tie between Medusa (I made my own wig!) and Abby Bominable from “Monster High” (see picture)

Movies:How to Train Your Dragon”: I will always rewatch this movie, but not the live action one!

Song to play each time you walk into a room: “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac, one of my favorite bands. It is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I will never hesitate to blast it in the car. On repeat.

Book: Hands down,  “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, a profound read that still sits with me today.

Dream vacation: Ireland —  I want to frolic in the Cliffs of Moher in a long, flowy skirt. I have had a fascination with Irish culture for years.

Something readers would be surprised to learn about you: I am a multimedia artist (not just 2D). I once made three life-sized sculptures that corresponded to poems I wrote. I also made a table for them to sit at, as I used to work in a woodshop in college. I also love audio production.
