Solomon Banjo, 36, of Charlottesville, Virginia; Joy Rogers, 64, of Southport; and Michael Durbin, 56, of Galena, Ohio were the three victims of the shooting. Generations Church in Southport, where Rogers was an attendant, is hosting a community prayer vigil on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Southport Waterfront.
According to officials, two out of the three fatalities were from gunshots to the head. Five others were injured in the event, where the accused Nigel Max Edge allegedly opened fire with an assault rifle from his boat at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Edge, a combat veteran suspected of mental health troubles and resident of Oak Island, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of common law-attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. His first appearance was Monday, where he was given no bond.
Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David described Edge’s actions as premeditated, as witnesses accounts put Edge at American Fish Company on Friday evening as well. According to the accounts, he sped away when another boat approached with its lights on. David has not ruled out seeking the death penalty in this case.
Should David seek the death penalty in the Edge case, it would move to Superior Court. Edge’s next court date is Oct. 13 for a probable cause hearing.
The investigation is still active; however, further updates will be provided directly by the City of Southport as they become available.
