SOUTHPORT — Emergency crews responded to a total of 18 impassable roads during flash flooding last night, ultimately evacuating four drivers.

Southport police and fire units were dispatched to rescue three motorists in city limits and one located on Caswell Beach Road between 9:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Emergency responders ultimately received nine calls for rescue. PCD asked the city what happened to the other five people that were not rescued and will update this article when a response is received.

No major evacuations of homes were required, though three residences reported minor water intrusion. Southport Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center on Fodale Avenue also experienced minor interior flooding, but residents remained safe and onsite.

Due to the extreme conditions, Southport’s High Water Rescue truck was staffed by first responders and deployed to safely transport affected individuals, as police cruisers and fire engines could not pass through several flooded roadways.

A partial Emergency Operations Center was activated at the Southport Fire Department Headquarters for on-site coordinating and assisting crews throughout the night.

“The professionalism and swift coordination between city leadership, public safety crews, and our regional partners helped ensure no lives or property were lost,” City Manager Noah Saldo said in a press release. “We thank the residents for their patience and the emergency responders for their tireless service through the night.”
