BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Brunswick’s state license plate agency in Shallotte will temporarily close due to the completion of the current operator’s contract Dec. 20 at 5 p.m.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles requested applications from potential contractors to manage the agency last month. It will reopen with a new contractor as an undisclosed date.
The state oversees license plate agencies, but they are primarily administered by local governments and businesses. The current agency in Shallotte, 5300 Main St. has been operated by Deborah Meadows since 1982.
In a press release Wednesday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation noted other nearby license plate agencies will be available to residents Monday through Friday.
- Bolivia, 30 Government Dr. NE, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Whiteville, 201 E. Main St., from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Wilmington, 2390 Carolina Beach Rd., Suite 108, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
The DMV also requested applications to reopen the agency in Southport, at 4831 Port Loop Rd., which closed on Jan. 6.
License plate agencies provide a number of vehicle-related services; they offer license plate renewals, replacement tags, duplicate registrations, vehicle registration and title transactions. Contract applications remain open until Dec. 14; forms can be found online. The NCDOT noted many vehicle services, such as registration renewals and property tax payments, can also be completed online. For questions, call 919-615-8521.
