CAROLINA BEACH — Hailed as one of southeastern North Carolina’s tastiest sweets, a popular donut joint on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk will be bringing in the new season a little earlier than normal.

In recent years, Britts Donuts has opened the last week in March or first week in April, but for 2024 the season officially kicks off Friday, March 22. Doors open at 4 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. — or until the donuts run out.

Hours continue 8:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. These hours will remain in place until Memorial Day weekend, when Britts opens seven days a week through mid-September.

The popular donut shop has been serving the sweet rounds since 1939. It was started by Harvey L. Britt until Bobby Nevins bought it in 1972; he and his family have been running the eatery since.

Britts is best known for the glazed donuts and only accepts cash. Lines snake down the boardwalk annually on opening day and throughout the season, as the shop has been written about in Food + Wine, Saveur, even National Geographic. The latter listed Britts Donuts as one of 101 reasons to travel for food and drink.
