We start this week with the 2020 primary election results, which provided few surprises and few new names.
And, while we’re talking about that, we get into campaign finances — perhaps one of the reasons we see so few new names on elected boards around the region.
Recently, the final round of campaign reports for the 2019 Wilmington election was made public (yes, this just now happened). What do they show? Candidates spent over $165,000 and raised nearly the same amount. While political action committees contributed to that, most of it came from individuals (some of whom happen to be developers).
And the number one campaign expense? It wasn’t TV or even radio ads. Nope. It was campaign mailers, which candidates collectively spent nearly $60,000 on.
Finally, we take a closer look at ‘calls for service’ and UNCW’s student housing. While the student apartments around the university make up the city’s number one region for police calls, it’s not exactly the same type of ‘crime’ as other notorious areas. Still, there are legitimate concerns.
So, we get into it.
