WILMINGTON — In recognition of National Kidney Month this March, the Willie Stargell Foundation is launching a community awareness campaign and opening registration for its annual 5K event this April.
The Wilmington-based foundation was established in honor of Willie Stargell, the Major League Baseball legend and National Baseball Hall of Famer who passed away in Wilmington due to complications from kidney disease. The organization is dedicated to supporting research, improving patient care, and easing the financial burden on families affected by the illness.

As part of its National Kidney Month initiatives, the foundation will host the Willie Stargell 5K Presented by nCino on Saturday, April 18. The event will take place at Mayfaire Town Center and is open to runners and walkers of all fitness levels.
The foundation encourages community members to register early to support their ongoing mission. Registration ranges from $30 for a one mile walk/run and $45 for the 5K. All funds directly support kidney disease research and patient financial assistance.
Stargell, who spent his entire 21-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, became a fixture in the Wilmington community later in life before his death in 2001.
5K registration, sponsorship opportunities, and additional information can be found on the organization’s website.
