Why journalism matters

I’ve seen the role journalism plays in my own life, keeping me informed, enlightening me on issues I’ve never heard about, holding our representatives accountable, and showing solutions to the world’s problems I didn’t know were on the table — that’s why I’m a journalist.

Through my coverage of homelessness and housing discussions, I’ve provided readers a look at potential solutions other communities have found success with and talked with local service providers about what they need to make real change. These stories have kept readers informed and perhaps inspired some to push harder for local action — seen most recently when the Wilmington City Council agreed to add social workers to the Wilmington Police Department and explore using one of the city surplus properties as a homeless shelter.

Journalism plays a critical role in our lives and I want to ensure Port City Daily readers have the latest, most in-depth information on issues facing the tri-county region, helping them engage with their community and shape it in ways they believe in.

I’ll keep following the stories, so readers have the info they need to advocate for change they want to see.

A few of Brenna’s favorites…

Local spot: Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria

Halloween candy and costume: Hershey bars! In 2022, I  dressed up as a pilot from “Top Gun” — one of my favorite movies.

Movies: Drama “The Worst Person in the World” and comedy “Lady Bird”

Song to play each time you walk into a room: Siouxsie and the Banshees’ cover of “The Passenger” by Iggy Pop. Iconic and energy-boosting, I’ve listened to it before big events and interviews — never gets old.

Book: “Abundance” by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, to understand solutions for the nation’s biggest problems: housing, climate change, infrastructure.

Dream vacation: Anywhere in Italy. I’ve visited Florence and Venice, and I’d like to return to Burano — so quaint, beautiful. It has the best gelato!

What else: My friends and I  started a film collective to get shorts and features from locals off the ground — Aisle 7 Collective is coming soon!
