WILMINGTON — With a cold front sweeping the nation, dropping freezing rain and snow in many states, an area shelter will open in Wilmington as temperatures dip below 30 degrees.
The Warming Shelter ILM opens to anyone needing warmth beginning Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Sunday, Jan. 11. It is located at Grace United Methodist Church at 401 Grace St. Upward of 100 people are welcome a night on a first-come, first-serve basis (no pets allowed).
In the 2023-2024 season, officials of the shelter said it had a 50% increase in those it served from the previous year, meaning resources and manpower remain high to keep it going. Financial donations are accepted here.
Supplies are welcomed as well. Items can be dropped off at Grace UMC or Hope Recovery UMC at 3403 Winston Blvd.; needed are trash bags, individually wrapped snacks, powdered coffee creamer, sugar, paper cups, napkins, Lysol spray, spray cleaners, gloves, hats and scarves.
The shelter’s wishlist is also located here to ship items and volunteers can sign up here for a multitude of duties.
Anyone experiencing homelessness is welcome to the shelter, with check-in at 5 p.m. and check-out the following morning.
