NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The billion-dollar endowment that formed from the sale of the New Hanover Regional hospital to Novant is hosting a meeting with the public later in the month.

The gathering will center on the New Hanover Community Endowment’s recently announced housing initiative, committing $19 million to address affordable housing solutions.
“The meeting will cover the housing plan, give some of our partners a chance to share their work and offer the public a chance to ask questions,” NHCE spokesperson Kevin Maurer said.
It will take place Wednesday, June 26, 5:30 p.m. at GLOW Academy (4100 Sunglow Dr.).
The strategy announcement came four months after the endowment rolled out its second cycle of funding; $53 million was announced in December to combat a variety of needs, from the nursing shortage to helping with elder care, to tackling literacy and youth violence prevention.
The endowment noted it had additional plans to take on housing in 2024. Last month, it announced three key focus areas:
- Stabilization: $8.1 million in core operating support over three years to nonprofit housing providers identified in the 2023 grant cycle
- Production: Facilitate the production and rehabilitation of affordable housing units through a rolling grants cycle using up to $11.5 million in 2024
- Capital: Exploration of creating a fund to provide low-cost capital for development projects aligned with the goal of increasing and preserving affordable housing. The study will be a collaborative effort engaging with city and county authorities, convening housing partners, and consulting subject matter experts to formulate actionable recommendations
This will be the first public meeting the endowment has hosted in 2024 after announcing last year it would begin rolling out more money than just once a year.
For anyone who cannot attend the affordable housing meeting in person, it will be streamed on Spectrum channel 13 and here. Community members with questions can submit ahead of time to information@nhcendowment.org or show up to the meeting to ask in person.
