Renovations to the center were funded by the 2016 park bond and the city’s last update had its groundbreaking slated for September.
“A January groundbreaking ended up being the timeframe that aligned after council meeting timelines and contract execution,” according to spokesperson Lauren Edwards.
Come Thursday, just ahead of MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 15, a ceremony will be held to celebrate its groundbreaking. It is scheduled for Jan. 11, 10 a.m. at the MLK Community Center, 401 South 8th Street.
The MLK Community Center is undergoing expansions and renovations to better serve the recreational needs of the surrounding community. The facility will include a new gymnasium, additional restrooms, office and storage spaces, and a full commercial kitchen.
The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2025.
