WILMINGTON — A nonprofit is pairing up with two local businesses to help fight food insecurity for Wilmington-area students.

Hendrick Toyota, the Wilmington Sharks and NourishNC are joining forces to encourage baseball fans to bring a bag of non-perishable food to the June 9th Wilmington Sharks’ game. Those that do will be allowed free entry at Buck Hardy Field at Legion Stadium at 7 p.m., when the Sharks face off against the Florence Flamingos.

Food donations will also be accepted at Hendrick Toyota (5640 Market St), Buck Hardee Field (2149 Carolina Beach Rd), or NourishNC (3606 Market St) two weeks in advance of the game. Fans will be able to drop off items Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and pick up free admission tickets upon delivery.

Donors are asked to refrain from contributing expired items or glass containers.

Hendrick Toyota will feature a free car giveaway for one lucky fan the night of the game, and the first pitch will be thrown by NourishNC’s executive director, Steve McCrossan.

“My arm might be a little rusty to be throwing the first pitch, but this will be a fun evening that is supporting a great cause, which is to feed hungry children in our community,” McCrossan said in a press release.

A full list of NourishNC programs can be found here, all of which help feed almost thousands of kids annually; one in five children in New Hanover County are food-insecure, the nonprofit reports.
