WILMINGTON — Only eight weeks old, puppies Phillip Doghouse and Casey Pupperson are two of a litter that are hoping to find new homes.

Currently under the care of Tim Spencer, director of marketing for Dauntless Dog Dog Rescue (DDR), they are full of boundless enthusiasm.

“We named them after volleyball players because their arrival coincided with the volleyball tournament,” Spencer said.

Named April Ross, Misty May, Jen Kessy and Carri Walsh, the other puppies are learning housebreaking while experiencing socialization with other household pets.

“My Australian Shepherd has been herding them,” Spencer said, explaining that any puppy that strays too far away from the others is likely to be corralled back towards the playpen.

Originally left at the Horry County shelter in South Carolina, the puppies were initially malnourished and in need of care.

“Someone transported them up here,” Spencer said. “They were so scrawny and thin when we got them, it’s great to see them grow up.”

Excited to chase balls and almost tall enough to try and knock the playpen over, the puppies are eager to learn.

“They’re learning to go to the bathroom outside. They go outside at least four times a day,” Spencer said.

“They’re a lot of fun but they’re a lot of work,” he observed, reaching for a recently escaped Phillip Doghouse who was climbing a nearby sofa.

Prospective adopters who are interested in submitting an application may do so online at www.ddrnc.org. The adoption fee for each puppy will be $300. After an application is approved, one of the DDR team will arrange a meeting between the puppy and their new owner.
