WILMINGTON — Only 8 weeks old, puppies Lola and Red are former strays who were taken in by Dauntless Dogs Rescue (DDR) after being picked up by Bladen County Animal Shelter. As foster coordinator for DDR, Emmery Jessup has been working diligently to socialize and train his latest charges.
“I don’t think they’ve had much human interaction,” Jessup said. “But they just love attention.”
Still learning basic training and housebreaking, Jessup explained that however adorable they may be, it’s important to remember that puppies are a full-time commitment.
“Even though they are cute puppies, they still require a lot of care,” he emphasized. “You have to pay for Heartguard — that first vet visit can cost $200. If you want to train the dog, that can cost more money.”
Curious and enthusiastic, Red and Lola’s favorite activities currently include tummy rubs and nap time.

“I think the ideal home could include older children and a calmer house,” Jessup said. “All dogs are good with back yards.”
Regardless of the house or family, Jessup emphasized that the most important quality in a prospective applicant is compassion.
“Most of all, they just need love,” he said. “As long as your hand is at the end of a treat or a toy, that’s all that matters.”
Applications for Red or Lola may be completed online, at www.ddrnc.org. An adoption fee of $250 per puppy applies, as well as a vet check regarding any other animals currently owned by the prospective adopter.

“We make sure they are fixed, up to date on vaccines,” explained Jessup. “After you are approved, you will be invited to come and meet your new puppy.”
