High School Hoops: Laney boys, girls grab road wins; South Brunswick, North Brunswick continue early season success

Boys basketball

Laney 61    Purnell Swett 57

Chris Bennett had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead Laney in a 61-57 comeback win over Purnell Swett. Davis Crenshaw and Marc McLaurin both finished with nine points, while Sherod Sidbury chipped in with eight.

West Brunswick 68    North Brunswick  53

South Brunswick 66    Cape Fear Academy 58

Brandon Gonzales was one of three players to finish in double figures for South Brunswick with 15 points on Friday night as the Cougars ousted Cape Fear Academy, 66-58. With the scored tied 37-all moving into the fourth quarter, South Brunswick put up 29 points during the final eight minutes of regulation to grab the win.

Alec Baker led Topsail with 23 points in the 71-67 setback.

 

Girls Basketball

Laney 55       Purnell Swett 26

Lexi Melville had 19 points for Laney in the winning effort.

North Brunswick 54    West Brunswick 38

The Scorpions continued their impressive start to the season with a 54-38 victory over West Brunswick. Jada Bellamy poured in a game-high 22 points and Taylor Perkins added 18 to give North Brunswick its best start under Coach Travis Fortune in his 16 years as head of the program.

South Brunswick 75     Cape Fear Academy 57

Topsail 54    Pender 30

Dominique Bryan led all scorers with 20 points as Topsail jumped out to an 18-point lead in the opening period en route to a 54-30 result against Pender.
