Overtime result puts UNC-Wilmington women’s soccer into Colonial Athletic Association Tournament

It quite literally came down to the final game of the regular season to decide seeding for the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Soccer Championship following UNCW’s 2-1 overtime result against Elon.

The Seahawks will begin the quest to its second CAA crown on Sunday, Oct. 30, by hosting William & Mary in a quarterfinal game at UNCW Soccer Stadium at 2 p.m.

UNCW, who boasts a 10-5-3 overall record, earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament after compiling a 4-3-2 conference mark. UNCW finished the regular season with back-to-back wins over William & Mary and Elon to secure their fourth CAA Tournament berth in the last five years.

The top six teams in the division earned a berth to this year’s CAA Championship as Northeastern University clinched the top seed and earned the right to host the semifinals and finals, November, 4-6, at Parsons Field in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Northeastern (12-6-1; 7-2-0 CAA) and No. 2 seed Drexel (8-6-4; 4-2-3 CAA), both received quarterfinal byes.

Quarterfinal action is set for Sunday, Oct. 30, with No. 3 seed James Madison (8-10-0; 5-4-0 CAA) hosting No. 6 seed College of Charleston (10-6-3; 3-3-3 CAA). No. 4 seed UNCW (10-5-3; 4-3-2 CAA) hosts No. 5 Seed William & Mary (10-7-1; 4-4-1 CAA). The winners of those two contests advance to the semifinals on November 4.

UNCW junior forward Serenity Waters and freshman midfielder Brittany Matsinger have been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for their efforts last week.  Waters earned the first CAA Co-Player of the Week honor of her career, while Matsinger was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week for the first time.

William & Mary enters the CAA Championship as the fifth seed after ending the regular season with a 1-1 draw at College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe will carry a 10-7-1 overall record into the tournament after completing the CAA circuit with a 4-4-1 mark.

UNCW and William & Mary will be meeting for the second time in nine days after the Seahawks earned a 2-0 victory over the Tribe on Friday night, marking their first-ever home win against William & Mary.
