With the extra week to prepare for its crosstown game, the Hoggard defense put up one of its best performances of the season as the Vikings shutout Laney 13-0 on Friday night.
Special teams play hampered Hoggard in their last appearance, but the third facet of the game proved to be the difference in Buctown as Jeremiah Kim connected on a pair of field goal tries and Keon Bradley blocked an attempt by Laney.
After a scoreless first quarter, Bradley came up big with a blocked field goal and return to the Buccaneers 13 yard line. That set up Kim’s 28-yard conversion for three points with two minutes left in the first half.
The Vikings were able to moving on the ground to start the third quarter and Tony Allen capped the scoring drive with a seven yard touchdown to give Hoggard a 10-0 lead midway through the period.
A 30-yard field goal by Kim just four seconds into the final frame added to the Vikings cushion as Hoggard moved to 2-1 in conference and 3-5 overall. The shutout was the first of the season for the Vikings’ defense. Hoggard (2-1, 3-5) will play host to West Brunswick on Friday, Oct. 21
Laney (2-2, 5-4) has the week off before returning to play with a trip to Shallotte for a date with West Brunswick on Friday, Oct. 28.
