Watch: UNC-Wilmington soccer knock off nationally ranked No. 5 UNC-Charlotte

WILMINGTON- The University of North Carolina-Wilmington Men’s Soccer Team faced a big test on Tuesday night as the Seahawks blanked nationally ranked UNC-Charlotte 2-0 at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Heading into the non-conference match, Charlotte was listed at No. 5 in the country and did not yet concede a goal this season en route to a 4-0 record. That changed in the 12th minute on campus when Phillip Goodrum received a pass from David Lozano and fired a shot between three defenders from 14 yards out and into the back of the net. UNCW became the first team to score against Charlotte this season and snapped a 371.56 scoreless streak.

Leading by one, UNCW faced a fierce Charlotte attack, but goal keeper Ryan Cretens was up to task alongside his defense led by freshman Mark Lindstrom. Joel Bylander and Ben Fisher kept things organized in the midfield and the Seahawks notched a key insurance goal in the 85th minute as Julio Moncada played a through ball to Stian Sandbekkhaug. The transfer from Valparaiso let loose a low strike across the face of the frame for his team-high fifth goal this season.

UNCW improved to 5-1 overall moving into conference play. The Seahawks open its league schedule at home against William & Mary at 7 p.m.  on Saturday, Sept. 24.
