Laney running back Imeek Watkins has been a staple on the Bucs’ offense since his freshman season. On Friday, the senior rushed for 154 yards on 36 carries, including a pair of touchdowns to key the Bucs’ second half rally in a 14-7 win over Northern Nash.
Both of the Bucs’ wins this season have been come from behind victories. Watkins has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the positive results. Karl Lane set up the game-winning score midway through the final frame with his first interception of the season to give Laney the ball deep in Northern Nash territory as Watkins scored his third touchdown of the season with six minutes left.
A defensive battle kept the contest scoreless at the break before Northern Nash used a 37-yard run midway through the third quarter to get on the board. Laney responded on the ensuing drive as Watkins punched in a 1-yard score to tie the game.
Moving into the fourth quarter, Northern Nash committed a key turnover on the interception. That gave Laney an opportunity its offense took advantage of to pick up the bounce back victory. Watkins rumbled in for an 11-yard score to grab the advantage with six minutes to play.

West Brunswick 34 Whiteville 7
It took 12 minutes to get the West Brunswick football team going on Friday night, but when the Trojans started moving the ball they never looked back in a 34-7 result over Whiteville in Shallotte.
Trailing 7-0 after the first quarter, West Brunswick scored 34 unanswered points to grab a bounce back win, improving to 3-1 overall. Bubba McCray had 15 carries for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
McCray’s 41-yard score midway through the second quarter helped the Trojans get going, but his 98 yard touchdown just before the half put West Brunswick in front for good. McCray now has seven touchdowns on the year and over 550 yards rushing.
Maliek King and Damonte Daniels also made trips to the end zone for the Trojans, who entertain cross-county rival North Brunswick (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 16.

North Brunswick 49 South Brunswick 17
North Brunswick second-year Head Coach Larry Brock is now 2-0 against his alma mater as the Scorpions cruised to a 49-17 win against South Brunswick in Leland.
The athleticism on the offensive side of the ball for North Brunswick was too much to handle for the Cougars, who trailed 22-3 after the first quarter. South Brunswick grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Jc Smith took the first place from scrimmage for 85 yards into the end zone to put North Brunswick in the lead for good.
Smith also broke a 75 yard run for a touchdown later in the game as North Brunswick racked up big play after big play throughout the night. The Scorpions carried a 29-10 cushion at the break and Jayhlen Washington put the game in check when the state track champion dashed 76 yards on the opening kickoff to start the second half.
North Brunswick moved to 2-1 overall heading into its second cross-county game in as many weeks with a date against West Brunswick (3-1) on Friday Sept. 16. South Brunswick has dropped its third straight, falling to 1-3 on the year. The Cougars are at home against Fairmont on Friday, Sept. 16.

Croatan 36 Topsail 34
A seesaw matchup in Hampstead saw the Topsail Pirates fall short in a 36-34 setback against Croatan.
Two kickoff returns in the fourth quarter, including a 95 yard score midway through the final frame put the visitors from Croatan in front for good.
With the game tied 8-8 after the opening period, Topsail trailed 24-14 at the break, but Jacob Floyd connected with Harrison Wright on an 81 yard touchdown to put the Pirates in front 34-30 before the ensuing kickoff was returned the length of the field.
Topsail dropped to 2-2 overall and Croatan improved to 3-1. The Pirates play at Jacksonville on Friday, Sept. 16.
