Former New York Yankees great Roy White will be in Leland over the weekend for the annual Hot Stove banquet to be held inside North Brunswick High School’s Auxiliary Gymnasium.
The Leland Hot Stove League is a non-profit that strives to recognize and honor individuals who have excelled both on and off the field. The main objective of the group is to raise money for an athletic scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each year to one outstanding baseball player in the Leland community.

White played his entire career in Major League Baseball as an outfielder for the Yankees from the mid-1960’s to late ’70’s. In a 15-year major league career, White played in 1,881 games, accumulating 1,803 hits in 6,650 at bats for a .271 career batting average along with 160 home runs, 758 runs batted in and a .360 on-base percentage.
He was a two-time All-Star and member of the 1976-77 World Series Championship clubs in New York.
White joins former Yankees Mike Torrez, Bucky Dent, Tommy John and Bobby Richardson as previous speakers at the annual fundraiser.
During the banquet, Leland Hot Stove League also presents the North Brunswick High School Player of the Year award. The award honors a high school player who demonstrates athletic talent, sportsmanship and maturity, and has kept a honorable GPA and school record.
Past winners include Steven Linkous (UNCW), Shelton Perkins (East Carolina) and current North Brunswick High School Coach Dustin Medlin.
