The holiday season is in full swing in the Port City, and decorations are continuing to go up around town.

The latest area to get a taste of the festivities is Greenfield Lake Park, where a Christmas tree will be lighted Thursday night at the world’s largest Rotary wheel, located at 1941 Amphitheater Drive.

The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. and will be followed by Santa’s arrival at the Rotary Wheel Gazebo. Volunteers from Toys for Tots will be helping Santa with coloring books and crayons. At 7 p.m., a screening of the holiday movie “Elf” starring Will Ferrell will start at the adjacent Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.

Admission to the family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Seating for the movie at the 900-seat outdoor venue is first come, first served. Snacks as well as both hot and cold beverages will be available for sale.

The events are made possible by a partnership between the City of Wilmington and the Greenfield Lake Collaborative.
