The East Carolina football team fell one win short of bowl eligibility this season following a 19-16 setback to American Athletic Conference foe Cincinnati at Dowdey-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates closed the year 5-7 overall and 3-5 in AAC play.
New Hanover alum Trevon Brown had a season-high eight catches for ECU, with 80 yards receiving and 50 kick return yards. Brown closed his sophomore year at wide out third on the team in receptions (41). In nine games played, he had 496 receiving yards, four touchdowns and 10 kick returns.
No. 18 Ole Miss rolled over No. 21 Mississippi State 38-27 to pick up the Egg Bowl win. It was the first time in 12 years Ole Miss left Starkville, Mississippi with a victory at Davis Wade Stadium. Terry Caldwell (Hoggard) had two tackles for the Rebels.
On the hardwood, Elijah Wilson (Laney) recorded his 1,000th point for Coastal Carolina on Saturday, but the Chanticleers fell 79-73 in the Big South opener against Campbell. Wilson had 11 points after dropping 14 in a win over College of Charleston. The junior guard is averaging 13.8 points per game, with a season-high 25 points against Piedmont International on Nov. 21.
Coming off their first loss of the season, No. 11 Arizona defeated Boise State 68-59 on Sunday to close the 2015 DirecTV Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, California. Kadeem Allen (New Hanover) went 4 of 6 from the field to finish with a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats. For the season, Allen has started all seven games for Coach Sean Miller, who is the nephew of former New Hanover High School Coach and Athletic Director Joe Miller. The redshirt junior is averaging 7.2 points per game.
T.J. Williams (Ashley) had 12 points for North Georgia on Saturday, but the Nighthawks fell 93-75 to Paine in Augusta, Georgia. Through seven games this season, Williams is averaging 11.4 points and five rebounds per game, while freshman Tyre Gathright (Ashley) has made three starts, averaging 15.9 minutes per game in his first season.
Tiana Edwards (Laney) scored 12 points in 31 minutes of action for Winston-Salem State, who improved to 2-3 last week with a win over Washington Adventist. Edwards has made two starts as a sophomore, averaging 10 points per game.
Jada Bacchus (Ashley) also had four points and five rebounds for Mount Olive on Saturday, but the Trojans fell 63-55 to UNC-Pembroke. Bacchus averages 7.8 points per game as a freshman.
