Laney High School alumni and Winston-Salem State freshman Tiana Edwards is having a breakout season for the Rams women’s basketball team as the first-year guard continues to give her team a boost off the bench, averaging 8.2 points in just over 17 minutes per game.

Edwards was  named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for a second time this season for the week ending Jan. 31. She also recently scored a career-high 24 points, including six-of-11 from behind the arc, in an 84-76 setback to Shaw University. Click here to watch video from Edwards’ career night.

After falling behind by as many as 24, Winston-Salem State stormed back thanks to a hot-shooting performance from Edwards, who connected on three-pointers in four straight possessions for the Lady Rams. The effort provided a spark for the team as Winston-Salem State showed new life and went on a 17-3 run that reduced their deficit down to just five points with 3:59 remaining. Edwards would add another three-ball to give the Rams its smallest deficit of the half, 73-69.

She also went 4-of-6 from three-point land against No. 11 Livingstone to finish with 12 points in a 64-56 loss over the weekend.

For the season, the freshman has knocked down 43 trifectas and is shooting 41.7 percent from long range.

Edwards received her first CIAA Rookie of the Week honors in December.
