New Hanover takes conference swim meet at BCC; Hoggard sweeps meet at UNCW

New Hanover used a pair of strong performances by the boys and girls to win Wednesday’s Mideastern Conference combined swim meet at the Aquatics Center on the campus of Brunswick Community College.

South Brunswick pulled out the girls victory 112-107 over the Wildcats, but the New Hanover boys cruised to a result over the Cougars and West Brunswick to secure the team victory.

The Wildcats dominated in the 400 yard freestyle relay as Drew Caravaglio, Kelby Bauer, Ian Barnes and Michael Bullard took top spot, while Jerry Spencer, Noah Webb, Harper Williams and Ethan Pierson finished second for New Hanover.

Caravaglio, Bullard, Nolan Jewel and Evan Blackwell added to the total with a second-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. Blackwell, Bullard, Keegan Santos and Evan Barnes continued New Hanover’s strong day in the pool with a win in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Tyler Bowersox (South Brunswick) earned first-place in the 100 yard breaststroke, Chris Anselmo (South Brunswick) placed in the top spot in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly, while Adam Calero added a win for the Cougars in the 100 yard freestyle.

Freshman Hannah Scarf took top honors in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke and teamed up with McKenzie White, Payton Drummonds and Bailey Rudd to clinch first-place in the 200 yard freestyle relay for South Brunswick.

White claimed top honors in the 100 yard butterfly ahead of Maria Fernandez (NHHS) and Rudd, who placed third.

Aleta Jewell also had a strong day for New Hanover with a win in the 500 yard freestyle and join Charlotte Jones, Rihanne Hsu and Helen Duffy for victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Hsu claimed first in the 100 yard breaststroke.
