The Seahawks begin their third season under Head Coach Adell Harris with a good mix of veterans and young talent. Versatile guard Kelva Atkins and transfer Sarah Myatt are the lone seniors on the team, which also features two freshmen and eight sophomores on the 13-player roster.
“Breakthrough was a key word among the coaches during our offseason workshop and we feel that we have the right pieces in place to make that happen,” said Harris. “We have depth at every position and I really think we’re in place to become a contender in the conference.
“We have more than just on-the-court goals and that starts in the classroom. We have a cumulative 3.1 GPA and dedicate ourselves to getting into the community with the goal of 500 volunteer hours. On the court, we want to focus on winning our home games and we have a lot of them.”
Harris and her club posed for the official team photo and then conducted several interviews to provide insight into the upcoming 2014-15 campaign during a recent media day.
The team entertains NCAA Division II Mount Olive in an exhibition on Nov. 8 at Trask Coliseum and kicks off the regular season on Nov. 16 against UNC Pembroke. Overall, the Seahawks have 17 home games and 12 road contests this fall.
“One or two things happen when you have adversity,” said Harris. “You get tougher and feed off that with a chip on your shoulder or you quit. We have lost, but we’re not losers. We don’t buy into that is who we are and we’re committed to turning this around. It’s been tough. It’s been a grind. Trust me. I think we have put ourselves in position to create a different future and earn what it takes to be a winner.”
