High school football fans in the area will get a preview for the upcoming season at the 28th Annual BB&T Football Jamboree on Aug. 15 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The prep scrimmage is a fundraiser for 10 southeastern North Carolina schools and student scholarships.
For the first time ever, all three of the Brunswick County high school teams will play alongside the four New Hanover County high schools, South Columbus and Whiteville.

The jamboree begins at 5 p.m., with a cheerleading showcase featuring squads from New Hanover, E.A. Laney, John T. Hoggard, West Brunswick, Whiteville, Wallace-Rose Hill, South Columbus, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and Ashley high schools.
Scrimmages begin at 6 p.m. and consist of two 12-minute periods. The match-ups are: Ashley vs. Wallace-Rose Hill; Hoggard vs. South Brunswick; West Brunswick vs. North Brunswick; New Hanover vs. South Columbus and Laney vs. Whiteville.
“This annual event highlights the excitement and anticipation for a run at conference titles and state playoffs for the 10 area high schools,” said BB&T’s Garrett Adams, jamboree co-chairman. “It is one of the most exciting high school events in southeastern North Carolina with a playoff atmosphere to help kick-off the season.”
Proceeds from last year’s event totaled $41,368, enough to fund 20 $1,000 scholarships (two per school). In addition, participating schools received about $2,000 each for their general operating budgets.
Since its inception in 1989, approximately $1,105,076 has been raised for area high schools. From that, 526 student scholarships totaling $512,000 have been awarded.
Advance tickets are $4 and available at all BB&T branches in Whiteville, Wilmington, Wallace, Rose Hill, Shallotte, Southport, Tabor City and Leland. Tickets are $6 at the gate.
