The Score: West Brunswick outlasts South; SW Onslow over North Brunswick

Southwest Onslow used a strong first half and forced North Brunswick into several key turnovers as the Scorps dropped their first conference game of the year 41-20 on Friday night.

Jonathan Williams set up the first score of the game with a 35-yard run and found the end zone two plays later from 5 yards out to give Southwest a 6-0 lead.

The Stallions used a 13-yard touchdown pass from Williams to J’Veon Walker to go up by 12, and DaMonta Winbush finished off a scoring drive following a North Brunswick turnover on a 9-yard run to take a 20-0 lead at the half.

The Scorps struggled to move the ball and came up short late in the second quarter when they failed to score with four tries from the Southwest 1-yard line.

North Brunswick got on the board early in the fourth quarter off a high snap in the end zone that resulted in a safety, but Emmitt Johnson raced in from 35 yards out to keep it a four-score game.

Shelton Perkins made one last push for the Scorps as the junior connected with Kyheem Cheatham for two touchdown passes, but the Stallions answered with a Isaiah Corbin 15-yard run to put the game out of reach.

Brandon Addison took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown with less than a minute to play.

The Scorps (0-1, 5-2) have now dropped two straight heading into another league game on Oct. 18 on the road against Croatan.

In what ended up being the most competitive game across the tri-county area Friday night, West Brunswick used two second-half touchdowns by Tavon Stanley and a Dylan Darguzas 10-yard score to beat South Brunswick 29-18 in Shallotte.

Davontae Hewett’s 62-yard punt return put West Brunswick in front 7-0, but Cole Blackburn responded with 1-yard touchdown run, and then hit Sharone Chapman on an 8-yard scoring play to give the Cougars a 12-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

After sitting for the entire first half, Stanley entered the game after the break and took his first carry 43 yards into the end zone. South Brunswick stayed resilient as Blackburn hit A.J. Price on a 12-yard strike to retake a three-point lead.

The Trojans were able to keep South out of the end zone in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. The victory snapped a five game skid for West Brunswick, while the Cougars fell to 0-8 on the year.

West Brunswick heads to Hampstead for a date with Topsail on Oct. 18. South Brunswick has the week off and will get back into action against the Pirates on Oct. 25.
