Here’s an update on a few of our local student-athletes who are playing at different colleges and universities across the state this fall.
Terry Caldwell (Hoggard)

Caldwell has played in five games for the Charlotte 49ers in the programs inaugural season. The linebacker from Hoggard is fourth on the team in tackles (35), has 7.5 tackles for loss with two fumbles recoveries and a sack for the 4-2 49ers, who picked a big 53-51 win Queen City rival and nationally-ranked Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Caldwell signed with UNC-C on Feb. 1, 2012, as a member of the 49ers first ever recruiting class under Head Coach Brad Lambert.
Kelli Gottry (Laney)
Gottry has started eight of 10 games for the Queens University Royals this fall and is second on the team in scoring. The freshman has nine points on the season with four goals and an assist. Kelli netted two game-winning scores earlier this season with an equalizer over Brevard College on Sept. 22
Last week, the Royals were ranked ninth on the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women’s Southeast Region poll.
Nikki Tiller (New Hanover)
Nikki leads the Cape Fear Community College women’s soccer team in points this season with nine goals and eight assists. The Lady Sea Devils are coming off a 4-1 win this past weekend over Patrick Henry as CFCC improved to 10-1 on the year.

Tiller has a number of classmates on the team from across the area including: Sarah Clinard (Hoggard), Megan Fouty (Topsail), Cheyenne Gordon (New Hanover) and Angela Zanelli (Laney).
High school notes and standings
With the fall sports season now midway through the schedule, here’s a look at some of the area standings in football, soccer and volleyball. Heading into this week on the gridiron, Hoggard has a bye week coming off their 21-18 win over New Hanover. Laney and Ashley both sit at 2-0, while New Hanover looks for their first league win against the Screaming Eagles on Friday.
The Vikings and Wildcats are also tied atop the conference in soccer, with Laney one game back heading into a big match at Hoggard on Tuesday, Oct. 8. New Hanover and Hoggard face off two weeks from today in the regular season finale.
As teams continue to jockey for position heading into the state tournament later this month, the top two 4A teams will be guaranteed at least two home games, while a No. 3 seed will start the playoffs on the road.
In volleyball, Hoggard has a stronghold on the conference with a 9-0 record and a perennial threat to make a run deep into the 4A playoffs. An interesting match on Tuesday puts South Brunswick at Topsail in a match that could decide a higher seed in the upcoming 3A tournament.
Wilmington Christian senior Austin Inman also announced this month his de-commitment from Coastal Carolina following his final year at WCA. The standout golfer has future plans to attend another university, but can’t announce his decision until he formally commits to the school.
Trevor Singleton has also narrowed down his list of potential schools down to four: UNC Greensboro, East Carolina, Gardner-Webb and Clemson. Singleton averaged 18.9 points a game his junior season at Hoggard.
