Soccer

Cape Fear Academy 1    Ashley 0

For the first time in Coach Meade McFarlane’s nine years as head of the Cape Fear Academy soccer team, the Hurricanes took a huge step in its programs history on Wednesday, with its first victory over a Wilmington public high school.

Luke Snyder put in the lone goal five minutes into the second half on a ball that slid out of Ashley keeper Ryan Keller’s hands in the 1-0 win for CFA.

“The difference in the match was the aggressive play of the Hurricanes,” Ashley Coach Giles Roberts said. “They were the first to about 90 percent of the balls played. When they won the ball the entire team transitioned into the attack. The same occurred when the Hurricanes lost the ball. As a team they would get behind the ball and quickly win it back as the Eagles pushed one or two players into the attack.”

David Durham recorded his second straight shutout for the Hurricanes, while Keller and T.J. White made five combined saves for Ashley.

The Eagles (0-1) head to the annual Battle at the Beach Tournament in Onslow County Friday, Aug. 23, for a date with Southwest Onslow. On Saturday, Ashley will take on N.C. School of Math & Science at the tournament.

Cape Fear Academy (4-0) entertains Parrott Academy on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Hoggard 2     Jack Britt 1

The Vikings picked up their first win of the season Wednesday night 2-1 over Jack Britt. Gus Piepmeyer put Hoggard in front in the 18th minute, but Jack Britt leveled the match six minutes later to send the game into the half tied 1-1.

Piepmeyer answered with the equalizer midway through the second half as Hoggard dominated possession throughout with six corner kicks and six shots on goal.

“This was a great start to our regular season,” first-year Hoggard Coach Peter Broadley said. “I am very pleased with our overall play and look forward to our next two games in Jacksonville at the Battle of the Beach Jamboree. Jack Britt worked hard and gave us a really good test in our first game, but I felt all along that we had too much fire power for their defense.”

Hoggard has two matches over the next two days as the Vikings head to the Battle at the Beach Tournament in Jacksonville with Laney, New Hanover and Ashley. The Vikings play Kerr-Vance Academy on Friday, Aug. 23, and Athens Drive on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Titans (0-0-1) head to North Brunswick for a date with the Scorpions on Monday, Aug. 26.
