Mid-Summer Classic held at Godwin Stadium over holiday weekend

The annual Carolina Men’s Baseball League (CMBL) All-Star Game was held over the Fourth of July weekend with the league’s three divisions split up into two teams based on how the players have done through the first half of the season.

The festivities began with the presentation of the colors by representatives of the Wilmington Post 10 American Legion, which followed the skills competition and Travis Adams’ performance as the winner of the home run derby.

As part of the Carolina Men’s Baseball League All-Star festivities, the CMBL held its annual father and son game Sunday.

As for the game, the Blueshirt All Stars squeaked out a 3-2 victory at Godwin Stadium.

The Blueshirts drew first blood in the fifth when Shockers’ Al Ducharme broke the scoreless tie, scoring from third on an overthrow to the pitcher. The inning ended with the defensive play of the game made by Davante Riley (New Hanover), who gunned down a runner at the plate with a laser throw to the catcher.

The Blackshirts responded with two runs in the home half of the fifth as Riley walked and scored after stealing third base with Adams at the plate. Adams knocked in Riley, and later scored on an Adam Cardin RBI single

The Blueshirts forged ahead in the seventh when Brandon Savoca and Scott Hall crossed the plate, and Savoca eventually came on to record the save with a one, two, three ninth inning.

The second half of the CMBL begins Tuesday, July 9, at Godwin Stadium.
