Wildcat boys capture Ashley Invitational title

Twenty-five high school track teams came together on Saturday for the Third Annual Ashley Invitational Track meet and a local boys team surprised the field by keeping the championship trophy in New Hanover County.

George Webb captured the 3,200-meter run and Jacen Murphy won the long jump for the only two individual titles, but the rest of the Wildcats found scoring spots from two-through-eight as New Hanover won the boys title with 110 points – outscoring county and conference rival Ashley (103.5) by 6-1/2 points.

Ashley’s record-braking 4×800 relay team – (L-R) Julia Bordreau, Sydney Westra, Lindsey Williams, Morgan Marraccini.

On the girls side of the ledger the championship trophy headed north as Liberty Christian Academy from Lynchburg (Va.) racked up 123 points to easily outdistance runner-up West Johnston, which finished with 98 points.

The youthful Ashley girls team continued to show they are a future – and maybe current – force with which to be reckoned as they finished third with 91 points.

“It was very exciting, all the guys stood up and I’m very proud of them,” New Hanover Coach Nolan Tobey said. “I think this shows we have a shot at knocking Ashley off in the (Mideastern 4A) conference meet. I’m glad they got this win so they can see all their hard work paying off.”

Despite a second-place finish for his boys, and a third for the girls, Ashley coach Ryan Hauck was happy with the results, and the way the meet ran.

“I think it was a great day,” Hauck said. “It was our first big invitational and I thought both the boys and girls did a great job. The girls are working hard, putting things together and buying into the system, and that’s half the battle.”

Julia Boudreau, who already holds Lady Screaming Eagles’ school records in the 800 (2:28), 1,600 (5:32), 3,200 (12:23), and as a member of the three-freshman, one-sophomore 4×800 relay team (10:41.22), was a member of the school-record 4×800 unit and she won the freshman 1,600 in 5:32.00 – eradicating the old meet record of 5:53.72 set by Jack Britt’s Lavenia Cotto in 2012. Boudreau also finished third in the 3,200-meter run with the school-record 12:23.

“It’s a lot of fun, I love being out here,” said Boudreau, who turned 15 last Friday. “People asked me if running so many events is tiring but it actually gets my adrenaline going for the next race. Doing so well as a freshman is exciting and I can’t wait to see how things go from here.”

Ashley’s Dominique Keyes wins boys 110 hurdles. Trask’s Ethan Bishof is second. Bishof came from behind to nip Keyes at the wire in 300 hurdles.

Boudreau was joined on the 4×800 relay team by Lindsey Williams, Sydney Westra, and Morgan Marraccini.

Youth continued to be served in the freshmen boys 1,600 where Cape Fear Academy eighth-grader Alex Nadaud. Nadaud won that race in 4:50.06, running away from New Hanover’s Will Parker (4:54.66) at the end.

“I came here to compete against myself, my own times,” Nadaud said. “It’s great that I can have some fun and winning is the icing on the cake. It’s nice to be able to represent my school.”

There were several records broken in the meet, and a plethora of exciting races. Two of those came in the boys 110 hurdles and in the 300 hurdles.

Ashley’s Dominique Keyes used a strong burst over the last three hurdles to win the 110 hurdles in 15.46 over Trask’s Ethan Bischof (16.09). But Bischof gained a small measure of revenge when he came from behind over the last hurdle to edge Keyes at the finish line, winning the 300-hurdles in 40.70. Keyes was times in 40.82.

“I didn’t let the loss in the 110s bother me, I just came into the 300s and I wanted to run my race and do what I do,” said Bischof, a senior. “Early in the race I was just trying to stay with him, give myself a chance at the end, and I really didn’t catch up to him until the last hurdle.”

Staying with the youth theme, Jordan Sales, a 10-year old track star, ran in the girls 100 and 200. Despite her young demeanor, Sales finished seventh in the 100 (13.04) and sixth in the 200 (26.57).

There was also a trophy awarded for the best combined scores (boys and girls), and that one went back to Lynchburg with the Liberty Christian Academy teams as they amassed a total of 195 points to edge past Ashley, which was second with a combined total of 194-1/2.

Ashley Coach Ryan Hauck gives instructions to participants in boys 4×800 relay.
