Port City Invitational (boys tennis)
Championship Round
Competition at the Port City Invitational boys tennis tournament wrapped up Saturday afternoon with Raleigh Broughton defeating Laney 5-1. A.J. Stilwell picked up the only point for Laney on center court with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Andrew Weddell. Broughton, a 4A state powerhouse each year, ran off five straight matches and clinched the tournament in a three-set victory for Blais Waters (6-1, 3-6, 6-1).

“Our guys wanted to get out a town for a few days together and what a perfect opportunity it was to be able to play against some great competition here in Wilmington. Each team here was really competitive and will play to our advantage when we head into conference play later this season,” Broughton Coach Bill White said.
Broughton defeated Laney in the quarterfinals in last year’s 4A playoffs.
The Bucs finished the Invitational with a 2-1 mark, following wins over New Hanover and last year’s state champion R.J. Reynolds (Winston-Salem). Hoggard placed third after beating the Wildcats in the consolation match, while falling to Broughton in the semifinals.
