McLeod Places 12th In UNCW Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL– Led by junior Payne McLeod‘s 12th-place showing, UNCW finished sixth overall at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday in its 2012-13 season opening tournament.

The Seahawks (289-294-298=881) finished two strokes ahead of East Carolina (291-294-298=883) and four strokes behind East Tennessee State (288-295-294=877). Duke (285-282-289=856) claimed the tournament title by six strokes over host UNC Chapel Hill (286-289-287=862).

NC State’s Albin Choi (66-71-68=205) finished 11-under-par for the tournament to claim medalist honors. Patrick Barrett (69-71-71=211) and Michael McGowan (72-68-72=212) of UNC finished second and third, respectively. Barrett competed as an individual.

McLeod (73-72-72=217) finished strong after double-bogeying the fifth hole. He was able to collect himself and post birdies on the following two holes to get back to even. Between holes eight through 11, he again struggled with a trio of bogeys to move to three over. But McLeod again recovered and posted birdies on the 13th, 16th and 17th holes to get even.
