WILMINGTON — Shoppers may have noticed a new, familiar sign erected in Mayfaire Town Center, with the opening of a national brand’s standalone ice-cream shop. To celebrate, it’s giving out free ice cream next week.

Ben and Jerry’s took over the former Cold Stone Creamery location last month and in honor of their Wilmington arrival, Cone Day takes place Tuesday, April 14. From noon to 8 p.m., every customer who stops by 951 International Drive will receive one free scoop of their favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

“This day is all about sharing joy, connection, and appreciation with our guests, and it’s the perfect way to begin our Mayfaire opening celebrations,” Jade Hedgeman‑Chioke, vice president of sales and marketing for the local Ben & Jerry’s franchise group, said in a release.

The day, celebrated annually as a thank-you to all of its customers, will include face-painting, games and music at the Mayfaire location.

Cone Day began in 1979 when founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield started their first ice cream shop in an old gas station in Burlington, Vermont. It has grown annually since to more than 550 shops worldwide and 13 countries. The company estimates it will give out around 1 million scoops for Cone Day in 2026.
